Waddell Garage Door Repair: When the Spring Breaks and the Door Will Not Lift
You heard a bang from the garage, now the opener hums and the door barely moves. In Waddell, with long drives to town and a car stuck inside, that is a bad morning. It is also one of the most common and most fixable problems we see.
A loud bang followed by a door that will not lift is almost always a broken torsion spring. Do not try to force the door or wind anything yourself. Disconnect the opener with the red cord only if the door is fully down, then call. A torsion spring pair installed runs $180 to $290, and the $35 service call is credited.

How to tell it is the spring and not the opener
Start with what you heard. Springs under tension let go with a sharp crack that people describe as a gunshot in the house. An opener failing makes no such sound; it just goes quiet or grinds.
Look at the spring on the bar above the door. A broken one shows a gap of an inch or two somewhere along the coil, and the two halves may be hanging loose. Do not touch it. The ends can still carry stored force.
With the door fully closed, pull the red cord to release the opener and try to lift the door by hand. If it feels like a hundred pounds and drops back down, the springs are no longer doing the lifting. If it rises easily and stays put, look at the opener or the sensors instead.
Why we replace springs in pairs
Springs on a two-car door are matched, and they wear at the same rate. When one lets go, the other has the same number of cycles on it and is often close behind.

The photo below shows a pair we prepared for a recent job in nearby Surprise: two springs, wound opposite hands, sized to the door.
Replacing just one saves a little today and costs you a second call in a few months. We size the pair to your door weight, set the tension, and check balance by lifting the door halfway and letting go. A balanced door stays where you leave it.
Why springs fail faster out here
A standard torsion spring is rated for roughly 10,000 cycles. A family that uses the door four times a day gets many years out of it. A household where the garage is the main entrance can wear that out much sooner.
Summer garage temperatures climb well above what the rest of the house sees. Heat dries out the lubricant on the coils and the bearings, and metal that is dry and hot wears faster. A coat of the right spring lubricant twice a year makes a visible difference.
We also check the cables, the bottom brackets and the drums while we are at the spring, because a frayed cable is the next failure waiting to happen. It takes a few minutes while the door is already apart.

Waddell garage door spring repair: real questions
How much does a garage door spring replacement cost in Waddell?
A torsion spring pair installed is $180 to $290. The $35 service call is credited toward the repair, so it is not an extra charge if you go ahead.
Is it safe to open my garage door by hand after a spring breaks?
Only if you release the opener with the red cord while the door is fully closed, and even then the door will be heavy. Do not try if the door is partly open. Call us instead.
Can I replace just one broken spring?
You can, but we advise replacing the pair. The second spring has the same wear and tends to fail soon after.
Do you come out to Waddell the same day?
We schedule as quickly as the day allows. Call (480) 405-0909 and we will tell you the next available window.
How long do garage door springs last?
A standard torsion spring is rated for around 10,000 cycles. Heavy daily use and dry, overheated coils shorten that.
Are you licensed?
Yes, Arizona ROC338265, licensed and insured.
Door stuck and the car is inside?
Call and describe what you heard. We will tell you whether it sounds like a spring and give you the next available window. The $35 call is credited to the repair.
